Machine Learning is a subfield of Artificial Intelligence. Its goal is to enable computers to learn from the data to make decisions or predictions on their own, identify patterns without being explicitly programmed to. It sits at the intersection of statistics and computer science, yet it can wear many different masks. You may also hear it labeled several other names or buzz words: Data Science, Big Data, Artificial Intelligence, Predictive Analytics, Computational Statistics, Data Mining, Etc.

The chief economist of Google, Hal Varian, predicted in 2009 that the sexiest job over the next decade would be data scientists. Not only has the amount of data captured continued to increase exponentially, so too has the reliance on the analysis of this data by large businesses to optimize their operations. At present the demand for talented data scientists is greater than the supply, and this demand is growing very quickly.
